Commemorative Window Display for WWI Centenary Wins 1st Prize for Walding & Son

November 25th, 2014

Suzette O’Rourke, our Funeral Arranger at Walding & Son in Uxbridge, won 1st Prize in a local competition for her amazing window display of original WWI items, commemorating and honouring those who fought in the War.

She received an editorial piece in The Uxbridge Gazette, and as a result, the Directors made a donation to Radio Lollipop.

Many local people came into the branch to say how much they liked the display. The fact that the items were originals, and therefore a hundred years old, was remarkable.

In particular, a hand-embroidered hankie from a sweetheart had a golden kiss sewn into it. One can just imagine that being kept in the top pocket of a soldiers uniform.

The original handwritten Waldings Funeral Ledger from 1914–1918 was also on display, showing that even in wartime, the funeral business kept going, serving the community and the people left at home.

Suzette remarked, “I found it a very humbling experience, and will always admire that sense of duty and honour to our country.”
